PANDIT ANINDO CHATTERJEE (GURU JI)
Pandit Anindo Chatterjee is a rare phenomenon in the art of tabla playing. Throughout history, a few artists stand out in each generation. They preserve their heritage while defining it anew, marking its evolution in time. Pandit ji is one of those rare few, his power/ speed combined with total clarity and sweetness is unparalleled and speaks of years of backbreaking practice. His vast knowledge of repertoire and ability to improvise in every style of tabla playing make him invaluable to Indian music. The spontaneity and intuitiveness of both his accompaniment and his solo improvisations speak of the depth of his artistry and leave his audiences speechless. Pandit ji personally oversees and delegates all activities of MATRA along with his disciple and son Anubrata Chatterjee.
Son of the world-renowned tabla maestro, Pt.Anindo Chatterjee , Anubrata was nurtured from day one to be a tabla player. He had the rare fortune of being the youngest and last “Ganda-Bandh” disciple of the great Guru Padmabhushan-Deshkottam Jnan Prakash Ghosh in 1992. Later on Anubrata continued to study under his father. At his very first public performance, he accompanied Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia amd since then,Anubrata has played many tabla solos and duets with his father and regularly accompanies musicians including Ustad Amjad Ali Khan,Ustad Rais Khan,Pt.Shiv Kumar Sharma,Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Ustad Shahid Parvez and many more all over the world.
Anubrata made his international debut with a solo performance at the B.B.C. world radio in the UK. in 1991. Since then he has traveled and performed in most major cities around the world. Anubrata thought still a traveling musician, is now concentrating a great amount of his energy towards the mission of MATRA and serves as the principle of MATRA.
